RSLC Statement: Republicans Sweep in Ohio’s State Supreme Court Races

Conservatives Maintain Control of State’s High Court and Secure Opportunity to Strengthen Majority

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sharon Kennedy, Pat Fischer, and Pat DeWine were victorious tonight, giving Ohio Republicans a clean sweep in state Supreme Court races. Kennedy’s election to the Chief Justice seat will give Governor Mike DeWine a chance to further strengthen the GOP majority on the court by appointing a replacement to fill her current role as Associate Justice.

“The RSLC’s Judicial Fairness Initiative was proud to invest in all three of the state Supreme Court races Ohio Republicans won tonight and we congratulate Sharon Kennedy, Pat Fischer, and Pat DeWine on their hard fought victories,” said RSLC-JFI President Dee Duncan. “Their wins are a major blow to Eric Holder’s sue until its blue gerrymandering scheme, and show the people of Ohio are yearning for conservative judges who will follow the Constitution and uphold the rule of law. The days of liberal judges using their seats on Ohio’s high court to advance the national liberal agenda are over.”

The RSLC-JFI in February announced a plan to push back on Eric Holder’s sue until its blue gerrymandering scheme by spending record resources in state Supreme Court races in key states where judges could play a role on redistricting litigation within the next decade. Helping conservatives take true control of Ohio’s state Supreme Court was a top priority for the RSLC’s Judicial Fairness Initiative, which spent over $2 million on an independent expenditure campaign opposing Jennifer Brunner, Marilyn Zayas, and Terri Jamison for their soft-on-crime records.
