Republicans Oust New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney, Sweep LD-3

Sweeney Had Been Senate President Since 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – State Republicans pulled off another shocking upset today, as Republican Edward Durr ousted Democrat Steve Sweeney, ending his eleven year run as Senate President. Sweeney was first elected to his seat 20 years ago.

Durr’s victory was part of an overall sweep for Republicans in New Jersey Legislative District 3. Bethanne McCarthy and Beth Sawyer both flipped the district’s Assembly seats that were held by Democrats. Their wins follow last month’s launch of RSLC’s “Right Leaders Network,” the committee’s recently announced initiative to enhance its efforts to support more women and minority candidates in state races to help grow the Republican Party from the ground up.

“If last night’s outcome in Virginia was an upset of monumental proportions, the result in New Jersey’s Legislative District 3 is a political earthquake,” said RSLC Deputy Executive Director Edith Jorge-Tuñón. “Steve Sweeney has spent the last decade leading the effort to make New Jersey the most taxed state in the nation -- his defeat displays how Garden State voters have rejected the socialist policies coming out of Democrat-controlled Trenton and are hungry for fiscal sanity once again. Congratulations to Edward Durr, Bethanne McCarthy and Beth Sawyer on this stunning sweep.”

The RSLC and its affiliated partners invested heavily in New Jersey in 2021, spending over $850,000 in the Garden State.
